Hayowen: A Spooky Display Font for Web Projects

I was working on a redesign for a boutique online store that sells handmade Halloween decorations when I stumbled upon Hayowen. The brand wanted something unique to stand out during the spooky season, and after trying a few display fonts, Hayowen caught my eye with its mysterious and slightly eerie vibe.

Hayowen is a display font designed with a spooky aesthetic in mind. It has long, flowing letters with subtle notches and curves that give it an old-world charm. The overall look feels like something you'd see on a haunted house sign or a vintage horror movie poster. It's not too ornate, but it definitely carries that mysterious energy that fits perfectly with Halloween themes.

When I first placed Hayowen in the hero section of the website, I noticed how well it complemented the dark background and glowing pumpkins in the image banner. The font didn't feel too heavy or overwhelming, which was great because it needed to be readable from a distance on larger screens. On mobile, I tested it at smaller sizes and found that it still maintained its legibility without becoming too cluttered.

One of the key things I considered was how Hayowen would work within the visual hierarchy of the site. As a display font, it’s best suited for headlines, banners, and call-to-action areas where impact matters more than readability. For body text, I paired it with a clean sans serif font like Montserrat to ensure the content remained easy to read and scan.

Using Hayowen for the main headline on the homepage gave the design a sense of playfulness and intrigue. It helped reinforce the brand’s personality—fun, creative, and a little bit spooky. When I used it for product titles in the shop section, it added a nice touch of character without making the layout feel too busy.

I also experimented with using Hayowen in a few different ways beyond just the main headline. In one case, I applied it to a CTA button for a limited-time offer, and it worked surprisingly well. The boldness of the font made the button stand out against a light background, encouraging users to click through.

For a digital brand kit, Hayowen could serve as a decorative accent in logos, social media graphics, or promotional banners. It’s not meant to be the primary font for extended reading, but it can add that extra layer of visual interest when used sparingly.

Readability is always a concern when choosing a display font, especially for websites that need to perform well across devices. I checked how Hayowen looked on both dark and light backgrounds and found that it had good contrast in most scenarios. However, I did notice that some of the thinner strokes became less visible on very light backgrounds, so I adjusted the color and spacing accordingly.

Font pairing is crucial for creating a balanced and professional look. Hayowen works best when paired with a simple, modern sans serif font for body copy. This combination ensures that the design remains visually appealing while keeping the content accessible and easy to digest.

Before finalizing the use of Hayowen, I made sure to check the available styles, weights, and webfont options. The font includes several variations that allow for flexibility in different design contexts. It also supports multiple languages, which is important if the website targets a global audience.

Commercial font licensing is another important consideration. Since this project involved a client, I verified that Hayowen had the appropriate license for use on their website and any digital assets they might produce. This ensured that everything was compliant and avoided any potential legal issues down the line.

Overall, Hayowen proved to be a great choice for this project. It brought a unique and memorable touch to the design while maintaining a balance between creativity and usability. Whether you're working on a holiday-themed website, a creative portfolio, or a branded landing page, Hayowen can help elevate your typography and make your projects stand out in a crowd.
